It is the third and final volume in Catton's Army of the Potomac trilogy, following Mr. Lincoln's Army (1951) and Glory Road (1952). The book recounts the final year of the American Civil War, from Ulysses S. Grant's Wilderness Campaign in May 1864 to the surrender of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.
